Frequently Asked Questions about building a new home

1. How do I choose a builder for my home?

Building a home is not an overnight process and requires constant honest and open 2-way communication for a period of time so it is important to choose a builder who you are comfortable with. It is also important to find out about the builders’ company history, past projects, and advisable to see first-hand the houses which the builder is currently working on or have completed. Vanagon Construction is more than happy to take you on a guided tour on houses we are working on or arrange with past clients to show their houses. Please contact us and we would make the necessary arrangements. We also recommend that you contact us to set-up an initial meeting to discuss your requirements and see if we are the right fit.

 

2. Where can I find an architect/designer to plan my new home?

Vanagon Construction has a few architects whom they have worked with in the past and could recommend. Please contact us for more details. Alternatively, you can look at the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association website or Architectural Institute of BC website to find one.

 

3. How much does it cost to build my new home?

The costs for building your new home depend entirely on your budget which Vanagon Construction can work with you to control. A number of factors (such as the location, size, style and material selections for your new home) will affect the overall cost of your new home.

 

4. How long will it take to build my home?

This all depends on the size of your new home. A house built on a standard lot (33 x 122 square feet) would usually take 6-9 months whereas anything larger could take 12-18 months.  Vanagon Construction will work with you to determine an achievable schedule and let you know your move-in date.

 

5. What is the process during the construction process?

Vanagon Construction will set-up periodic meetings with you to sit down and discuss the progress of your new home and answer any questions you may have. We would also conduct walk-throughs of the site during different stages so you can remain involved.

 

6. What warranty do you offer and for how long?

Vanagon Construction offers clients with a 2-5-10 year New Home Warranty (2 years on labour and materials (some limits apply), 5 years on the building envelope and 10 years on structure) through Travellers Canada (http://www.travelerscanada.ca/en/Specialties/surety/residentialRealEstate/BCHomeWarranty/index.aspx)
